ANDREW MCINTOSH
Andrew McIntosh is a Los Angeles-based composer, violinist, and violist. His new work will be paired with one of Telemann's Paris Quartets.
Andrew plans to use small fragments of harmony from Telemann's music, spectrally expanding them and layering them into a soundscape that explores the unique and varied colors that baroque instruments can provide. In particular, Andrew is developing a technique of playing resonant harmonics and glissandos on the harpsichord with the aid of small aluminum pipes and guitar slides used inside the instrument. This will provide the backbone of the piece, along with a retuned viola da gamba, while the other instruments float and weave around the harmony, sometimes providing a more rhythmic foundation and sometimes functioning more atmospherically. The piece will be constructed in a single continuous movement, but with large blocks of contrasting material overlapping so that they immerse the listener in a constantly shifting and unpredictable sonic environment.
